Bauchi State Governor, Malam Isa Yuguda, has condemned the wanton destruction of lives and property which followed the announcement of result of last weekend's presidential election in the state and other parts of the North.
The governor, who spoke to journalists in Bauchi Wednesday, said his government was on top of the situation and advised the people to remain calm and go about their legitimate duties.
He said peace was the most important aspect of life which must be promoted at all cost, adding that his administration was committed to peaceful coexistence among the people.
The governor however appealed to religious leaders to avoid teachings that could lead to the breach of the peace in the state, warning that anyone caught would be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the land.
Also Wednesday, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the state said it lost 32 members, while 82 churches were burnt during the mayhem that followed the last elections in the state.
The association warned that none of its members would participate in the remaining elections until adequate security was provided by the state government.
Addressing journalists at the NUJ Press Centre in Bauchi, the state CAN Chairman, Bishop Musa M. Tula, accused the rioters of targeting innocent Christians who had nothing to do with the political situation in the state.
